mccp: company no.3982419 registered charity no.1096843 latest news about us contact us links montgomery plans who are we? a group of local people with the common desire to provide residential care for the elderly of the area – residential, nursing and elderly mentally infirm (emi). wide ranging discussion resulted in the identification of other needs for both the elderly and the young which caused the group to widen its horizons whilst being determined that its main aim was to provide a residential care home together with care apartments having services linked to the main home. we are a company limited by guarantee with a board of directors and a management committee. we are a charitable organisation and any income received is used only to further the aims and objectives of the company. where did we start? the group first met in december 1999 and at an open meeting in 2000 the residents of montgomery were asked for their suggestions on the needs of the area. it was obvious that ‘getting together’ and ‘learning about new technology’ was high on the list; closely following, the hope of having an accessible care centre (public transport in montgomery is not conducive to visiting the nearest care homes). what happened next? one idea proposed was the starting up of a project that would provide an information technology centre in the town for use by all age groups. this, called the cameo club (come and meet each other), was successfully opened in september 2000. the project benefitted from donations of computer equipment, gifts of money, and wonderful volunteer trainers who introduced many novices to the computer world including two young men with learning disabilities. thanks to grant aid received from various sources, this club – now the montgomery computer centre – has grown substantially and is host to courses run by coleg powys. regular courses are:- microsoft word, excel, desktop publishing, power point, access, scrapbook, internet-email, digital photography and web design, and in the past a special course for the farming fraternity. the computer club is now the main fund raiser for the principal aim – that of providing care facilities in montgomery. are we running anything else? yes! in 2002 a self-financing project called “chatterbox” was started. the older generation was invited to come to the dragon hotel each month where they could chat about old times in montgomery, bringing along old photographs and scrap books. this has proved both interesting and worthwhile and, like the computer club is still strongly supported. in 2004 a sponsored “scarf knit” was carried out by members and on 6th december 2004 it was ceremonially measured by alex carlisle. it measured 36ft 6 ins and raised £178.50. also that year a fund raising exhibition of members craft work was held in the old bell. separate accounts of life in past times have been written up to produce two (fund raising) booklets called “memories” and “more memories”. the age group of this gathering ranges from sixty to ninety plus! in 2004 the mccp took over the running of the fortnightly (as from 2013 changed to monthly) luncheon club which caters for approximately 30 people aged 60 and over. due to the assistance of our volunteers this venture was able to raise a small amount of funds for the mccp’s main objective, whilst keeping cost of lunches at a low level. two subsidised special outings a year for members (which include non-club members to fill the coach) also helped with fund raising, in january 2016 the luncheon club was transferred to the dragon hotel who provide us with a delicious lunch for £8.50 per head. this takes place on the last wednesday in the month. montgomery old people’s association we were assisting in the organising of meals on wheels for several people in the town. this was quite simply a voluntary scheme co-ordinated by one of our directors with no financial gain – and none expected. it also fulfilled the aims of the mccp. unfortunately due to powys county council cut backs this service has now finished in montgomery and now? over the years meetings have been held with several care home providers -some showed interest but none was able to partner us. however in 2007 we were extremely lucky to find kelly residential ltd who were happy that the mccp could have an input into the home and provide a link with the community. in 2008 they officially became our partners and agreed to finance the building of the home and manage it. they were happy that an area within the premises be allocated to the mccp at a rent to be agreed. this will house the computer club which will also be available to residents of the home. the luncheon club and chatterbox will be integrated into the activities of the care home. the arrangement also ensures that the mccp has an interest in the home in perpetuity. the mccp has paid for the option on a plot of land on poole road and also has an option on a further small plot to facilitate access. other costs have been shared with our partners who have also paid for architectural and surveying fees. unfortunately for various reasons in august 2013 we had to part company with kelly residential. this was very amicable and they wished us well in our endeavours to find another partner. november 2014 we were very lucky to have an introduction to mrs barbara scandrett who was very interested in our project. since then after a lot of hard work and tremendous effort she has set up a company called arboretum care village ltd. montgomery project october 2015 arboretum care village ltd has now applied for pre-planning permission for the arboretum care village to be built in montgomery. we are very hopeful that as long as the necessary funding can be achieved then at long last our dream will come true. we have been very patient... the recession, greater crested newts, and environmental considerations have been delaying factors – but our enthusiasm has not waned. we have the support of the whole community which means a lot to us and which confirms our belief that this is a worthwhile and necessary community venture. may 2017 after having received the necessary planning permission and all the work carried out for the start of the build, we were suddenly shocked and disappointed to learn that barbara scandret and her team were unable to carry on with the project. in the next few months she made some attempt at finding funding and care providers to no avail. january 2018 tom till estate manager for the earl of powis on whose land the care village is to be built, with the blessing of the earl of powis set up a country wide search for anyone who would be interested in building and running a care village in montgomery. a builder has now shown interest in building the village and interest has been shown by care providers. meetings and investigations are presently taking place. meanwhile we await the results of these talks. we still have the support of the community who want this much needed facility in montgomery to proceed. directors & trustees dr p ashton mr j brown mr p humphreys mr p jones (managing director) mrs p jones (company secretary) mr m michaels rev. m turnock mrs a yewdall miss jane lloyd mr. haydn andrew mccp business address bronheulwen station road montgomery powys sy15 6qx | © mccp | | g17 | i.t solutions for home & office |
